What with the hours spent practising their instrument, the concerts taking them far into the night and the days spent in transit, the life of a professional musician often resembles that of a top athlete! For this Cultural Olympiad, Le Concert de la Loge is back in Olympic form (as its missing adjective attests) and will test your stamina with a marathon of concertos, a sporty genre if ever there was one, but one in which competition always remains good-natured. The programme naturally includes Vivaldi, the heavyweight of the discipline, with five hundred concertos under his belt!

Though a Frenchman, the violinist and composer Jean-Marie Leclair was trained in the Italian school, and quickly established himself on his return to Paris as one of the foremost virtuosos of his time. His sonatas and concertos achieve a remarkable synthesis between the French and Italian styles, and display many characteristics of Vivaldi’s style. This confrontation with pieces by the Venetian master, whether sacred or instrumental, should see sparks flying!

As part of its continuing partnership with the Louvre Museum since 2016, Le Concert de la Loge will offer an exceptional television programme for the Arte channel in the Cour Marly. The programme juxtaposes two of the all-time champions of classical music, Vivaldi and Mozart, the former being the initiator of the concerto genre (and the composer of nearly five hundred of them!) while the latter is acknowledged as having brought it to a peak of perfection. Both men also abolished the boundaries between vocal and instrumental music in works of immense lyricism and theatricality.

When the impresario Johann Peter Salomon invited Haydn back to London in 1794/95 to perform his last six symphonies, he conceived things on a grand scale and provided the composer with an orchestra of around sixty musicians, an imposing number for the period, in which, notably, the woodwind section was doubled. Julien Chauvin has therefore decided to count on the combined forces of Le Concert de la Loge and Orfeo Orchestra in an attempt to let us hear these two symphonies as Haydn himself conducted them in the British capital.
