IL TEATRO
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)

Whether in his five hundred or so concertos or in his twenty surviving operas, we find the same spontaneity, the same freshness, the same melodic inspiration, the same irresistible rhythmic figures in all of Vivaldi’s works. Hence the solo parts of the concertos constantly cry out for the theatre, while the virtuoso operatic arias irresistibly recall the violinist’s instrumental prowess in the concertante style. As is demonstrated by these concerts, which skilfully intertwine the two genres.

PROGRAMME:

MEZZOS TRIOMPHANTES
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)

Two mezzos in demand with the leading opera houses are pitted against Julien Chauvin’s violin in this concert honouring the dynamic and colourful music of Antonio Vivaldi! Concertos and operas are subtly intermingled here, since two works written for Johann Georg Pisendel, one of the great violinists of his time, who travelled to Venice specially to meet Vivaldi, are placed between virtuoso arias designed to show off the singers’ paces.

A gala night at the opera in the company of three of today’s finest French voices is an offer you can’t refuse! Between the flamboyant Patricia Petibon, the bewitching Gaëlle Arquez and the seductive Stanislas de Barbeyrac, all the charms and torments of the most enthralling protagonists of Mozart and Gluck will be on display in the church of Auvers-sur-Oise, the town that was once the paradise of the Impressionists. A choice instrumental complement with the ‘Jupiter’, the last and most majestic of Mozart’s symphonies.

CLOSING OF THE EUROPEAN MUSICAL SEASON
Henry-Joseph Rigel (1741-1799)

Do you know Henri-Joseph Rigel? This German-born composer moved to France in 1767 and became one of the most popular figures in pre-Revolutionary Paris: his music was performed at the Concert Spirituel, where his oratorio-like sacred dramas, such as La Sortie d’Égypte, enjoyed great success. So too did his instrumental music, which includes two sets of six symphonies and numerous keyboard concertos, including the one performed here by Justin Taylor, a longstanding partner of the orchestra.

This concert is part of the European Musical Season organised by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in partnership with France Musique, on the occasion of the French Presidency of the European Union.

PROGRAMME:

Rigel • Symphony No. 10 in D minor op.21 No. 2 • Sonata 1 for pianoforte in D minor • Duo for pianoforte and harpsichord in C minor op.14 No. 1 • Concerto for pianoforte and orchestra in F major • Symphony in C minor op.12 No. 4

THE FOUR SEASONS
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)

It’s hard not to find something to enjoy in Vivaldi’s abundant output! There’s The Four Seasons, of course, which has done so much for his fame, but that work is only a tiny part of the five hundred or so concertos scored for multiple instruments (violin, but also flute, bassoon, cello, mandolin or trumpet!). Nor should we forget an impressive corpus of operas displaying the same unbridled inspiration. A change of scenery is guaranteed with this express trip to the Venetian lagoon!

PROGRAMME:

Vivaldi • Violin Concertos op.8 « The Four Seasons » • Cello Concerto in D minor RV 407 • Concerto for flute in G minor « La Notte » RV 439 • Concerto for bassoon in C major RV 477

Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) • Leonardo Vinci (1690-1730) • Georg Friedrich Haendel (1685-1759) • Antonio Caldara (1670-1736)

Already noticed alongside Le Concert de la Loge on its acclaimed recording of Haydn’s Stabat Mater, the young Canadian soprano Florie Valiquette now joins Julien Chauvin and his ensemble for a Baroque recital featuring – in addition to excerpts from oratorios by Handel and Caldara – Vivaldi’s famous motet In furore, accompanied by other instrumental works by the ‘Red-haired Priest’. An eloquent demonstration that the same richness of melodic inspiration permeates the entire oeuvre of the Venetian composer.

PROGRAMME:

Vivaldi • Concerto per ripieno RV 156 • Sonate for violin and basso continuo op.12 • Concerto for 2 violins and cello RV 565 • Trio Sonata « La Follia » RV 63 • In Furore iustissimae irae

What with the hours spent practising their instrument, the concerts taking them far into the night and the days spent in transit, the life of a professional musician often resembles that of a top athlete! For this Cultural Olympiad, Le Concert de la Loge is back in Olympic form (as its missing adjective attests) and will test your stamina with a marathon of concertos, a sporty genre if ever there was one, but one in which competition always remains good-natured. The programme naturally includes Vivaldi, the heavyweight of the discipline, with five hundred concertos under his belt!

VIVALDI IN PARIS
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) • Jean-Marie Leclair (1697-1764) • Nicolas Chédeville (1705-1782)

Though a Frenchman, the violinist and composer Jean-Marie Leclair was trained in the Italian school, and quickly established himself on his return to Paris as one of the foremost virtuosos of his time. His sonatas and concertos achieve a remarkable synthesis between the French and Italian styles, and display many characteristics of Vivaldi’s style. This confrontation with pieces by the Venetian master, whether sacred or instrumental, should see sparks flying!

IPHIGÉNIE EN AULIDE
Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714-1787)

19 April 1774: Gluck’s Iphigénie en Aulide scored a triumph at its premiere on the stage of the Académie Royale de Musique. The sixty-year-old composer, who had arrived in France a few months earlier and enjoyed the royal patronage of his former pupil Marie-Antoinette, was at the peak of his career when he wrote this work as a manifesto for his reforming ideas: a tighter plot restricted to a handful of characters, greater continuity between airs and recitatives, and a larger role for chorus and dancers.

GALA VIVALDI & MOZART
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)

As part of its continuing partnership with the Louvre Museum since 2016, Le Concert de la Loge will offer an exceptional television programme for the Arte channel in the Cour Marly. The programme juxtaposes two of the all-time champions of classical music, Vivaldi and Mozart, the former being the initiator of the concerto genre (and the composer of nearly five hundred of them!) while the latter is acknowledged as having brought it to a peak of perfection. Both men also abolished the boundaries between vocal and instrumental music in works of immense lyricism and theatricality.

PROGRAMME:

Vivaldi • Arias from Juditha Triumphans, Orlando Furioso • Sinfonia in G major RV 151 (alla Rustica) • Violin Concerto in D major RV 226
Mozart • Arias and duets from Le Nozze di Figaro, La Clemenza di Tito, Don Giovanni • Symphony No. 40 in G minor K. 550 • Concertante for violin and viola in E flat major K. 364/320

LONDON SYMPHONIES
Antonio Salieri (1750-1825) • Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) • Luigi Cherubini (1760-1842)

When the impresario Johann Peter Salomon invited Haydn back to London in 1794/95 to perform his last six symphonies, he conceived things on a grand scale and provided the composer with an orchestra of around sixty musicians, an imposing number for the period, in which, notably, the woodwind section was doubled. Julien Chauvin has therefore decided to count on the combined forces of Le Concert de la Loge and Orfeo Orchestra in an attempt to let us hear these two symphonies as Haydn himself conducted them in the British capital.

In the 1770s and 1780s, Paris was one of the most active and coveted musical centres in Europe. To triumph at the Opéra was a sure-fire path to glory and recognition, and the French capital naturally attracted all the foreign composers in search of success, from Mozart to Gluck, by way of Sacchini, Grétry, Vogel and Rigel. Interspersed with a few instrumental pieces to allow the singers to catch their breath, this panorama of fashionable arias immerses us in the artistic ferment of Paris on the eve of the Revolution.

Following a double portrait of the rival castrati Farinelli and Carestini, Philippe Jaroussky is reunited with his comrades-in-arms of Le Concert de la Loge for a recital rich in discoveries featuring arias from operas of the Age of Enlightenment that have since fallen into obscurity. There is, however, one thing these works by Gluck, Piccinni and Hasse have in common: the figure of Metastasio, the poet of genius who wrote many librettos on historical or mythological plots that were set by several generations of composers throughout the eighteenth century. Inquisitive music-lovers, this is for you!

CHIMÈNE OU LE CID
Antonio Maria Gasparo Sacchini (1730-1786)

The end of the eighteenth century, just before the Revolution, saw an updated take on a literary and historical work: Le Cid, Corneille’s tragicomedy based on the medieval Spanish epic. It was Marie-Antoinette who brought Sacchini to the French court and commissioned him to write this opera, which no longer places the male hero in the limelight, but instead examines the tragedy from the point of view of Chimène.

The action begins as Rodrigue (Le Cid) returns to court after escaping the pursuers sent by Chimène, whose father he killed. Time has not lessened either Chimène’s love or her hatred for him. The King comes to console her and finds himself faced with an angry woman who still demands revenge. When Rodrigue comes before her, she realises that honour now divides them but, unable to kill him as he asks her to, she drives him away…

LA CRÉATION
Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)

Right from its first performances in Vienna, the public was certain that The Creation constituted the supreme masterpiece of Haydn, then at the summit of his career. The oratorio naturally spread rapidly throughout Europe, despite the ravages of the Napoleonic wars. It had its Paris premiere on Christmas Day 1800, sung to a French text following contemporary practice. The evening went down in history, not for the music or the presence of Haydn (who disappointed hopes that he might come for the occasion) but for the attempt on the lives of the Emperor and his family in the rue Saint-Nicaise as they were making their way to the concert hall. Napoleon escaped unharmed and duly turned up, albeit slightly late, thus enabling La Création to be given as scheduled, and to benefit from some unexpected publicity for its subsequent performances!
