Whether in his five hundred or so concertos or in his twenty surviving operas, we find the same spontaneity, the same freshness, the same melodic inspiration, the same irresistible rhythmic figures in all of Vivaldi’s works. Hence the solo parts of the concertos constantly cry out for the theatre, while the virtuoso operatic arias irresistibly recall the violinist’s instrumental prowess in the concertante style. As is demonstrated by these concerts, which skilfully intertwine the two genres.
